- If hiking is what you like, Taupo has many trails to offer. A member of the Distant Waters staff will set up a trek to fit your needs. Go for an hour or for a day. Any one of New Zealand's gentle urban walkways or intense wilderness treks are sure to satisfy a hiker of any level. The North Island has several alluring tracks as well, especially around Tongariro National Park, Lake Taupo, and Urewera National Park. TheTongariro trails, amongst the volcanoes, offer some of the most spectacular scenery.
